It’s time to meet Septmeber’s oil of the month – Rosemary!
Rosemary has to be my most favorite herb to cook with. I love it’s sharp, fresh scent and the warm, cozy feeling it brings to some dishes.
But what about the essential oil?
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis ct. 1,8 cineole)
Rosemary essential oil is steam distilled using the leaves and twigs of the rosemary plant. It is a top-middle note that has a strong, fresh, herbal, and woody aroma. Rosemary essential oil blends well with other herbal oils as well as coniferous and citrus oils.
A bit of chemistry…
Rosemary essential oil is high in monoterpenes, ketones, and oxides. It has three main chemical components; 1,8 cineole, camphor, and a-pinene.
1,8 Cineole: Airborne antimicrobial, analgesic and antinociceptive (reduces pain), antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antispasmodic, antiviral, cognition enhancer, gastroprotective, increases cerebral blood flow, mucolytic (breaks down mucus), skin penetration enhancer.
Camphor: Analgesic, antibacterial, anti fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-tussive (relieves cough), mucolytic, CNS stimulatant (stimulates central nervous system).
a-pinene: Analgesic and antinociceptive, antibacterial, anti fungal, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antiviral, anxiolytic (reduces anxiety), gastroprotective.
Now that we know the therapeutic properties of each chemical component, let’s see what the benefits of Rosemary essential oil are…
Physical Benefits:
- Minor pain management.
- Reduces inflammation and muscle spasms.
- Creates circulation and warmth – perfect for pain in muscles and joints.
- Eases respiratory congestion and cough.
- Beneficial for skin regeneration, acne, and hair loss.
Emotional/Energetic Benefits:
- Promotes mental clarity.
- Energizes, strengthens, and uplifts the mind.
- Helps clear negativity and encourage a positive outlook.
*Non-toxic, non-irritating. May cause skin irritation if oxidized.
Quick Use:
Start your day right! Energize and clear your mind by placing 1 or 2 drops on your shower floor. It will create a gentle but effective aromatic scent. Be sure not to put it in an area where the water hits directly. You don’t want it to wash right down the drain.
Thanks for reading! I can’t wait to share more about rosemary with you this month.
